Prophesee and MVTec Partner to Support Integration of Prophesee Event-Based Metavision® Cameras with MVTec HALCON Machine Vision Software

Machine vision system developers can leverage the performance and efficiency of event-based cameras with the industry leading machine vision standard software MVTec HALCON to enable new ML vision features for industrial applications

PARIS – October 3, 2022 – Prophesee SA, inventor of the most advanced neuromorphic vision systems, and MVTec Software GmbH, a leading international provider of machine vision software, today announced compatibility between MVTec’s standard machine vision software HALCON and Prophesee’s event-based Metavision cameras. The resulting integration, achieved through a jointly developed data acquisition bridge, enables HALCON users to run their machine vision applications directly with a Prophesee event camera and track event-based data with HALCON, opening a wide range of potential applications to take advantage of the performance and power efficiency of this innovative approach to acquiring event-based vision data.

The collaboration strengthens the ability to utilize native event data to expand and optimize overall functionality in MV systems, in a way that cuts development time and ensures a more secure end-to-end development process. The two companies continue to work on broader compatibility between their technologies.

Demonstrations of the integration can be seen at the Prophesee booth 8B29 (Hall8) at VISION 2022 October 4 to 6, in Stuttgart.

The HALCON machine vision software provides a robust set of widely used capabilities that facilitate rapid development of any kind of machine vision application. It features the availability of large number of ready-to-use algorithms. Through the integration with Prophesee’s event-based Metavision® cameras, developers can implement machine learning-enabled applications for tasks such as high-speed counting, gauging, matching, defect detection, etc. using event-based data. The integration enables two types of data streaming: 1) frames generated from events or timesurfaces on which users can apply any Halcon 2D processing) and 2) data in XYTP format that can be processed as a 3D point cloud using time as depth axis. This enables next-generation machine vision systems that operate at much higher speed, in challenging lighting conditions, are able to detect the most fleeting cues to improve production quality.

“Event-based cameras have many advantages over traditional frame-based approaches. Supporting them is in line with our own understanding of being a technology leader by providing innovative machine vision software products. We are pleased to work with Prophesee to expand the range of its potential through the support of our industry-proven software HALCON,” said Thomas Hopfner, Product Manager Interfaces at MVTec. “The openness and customizability of both our platforms gives developers a variety of options to take full advantage of the power of event cameras that are now coming to the market from many machine vision suppliers.”

“Being able to integrate and test event-based data within the HALCON environment is a powerful and efficient method to bring exciting new applications to market. We believe this will open up even more opportunities to leverage the time, cost and efficiency benefits event cameras can bring to industrial visions systems,” said Luca Verre, CEO and co-founder of Prophesee.
